About the Lab
Searching for new particles using particle accelerators at CERN.
What Research Looks Like
During the school year it's mostly data analysis, during the summer it includes detector work at CERN.
Example Undergraduate Projects
- Find a way to measure the noise in detector signals from proton-proton collision data
- Investigate the cross-talk in data from a muon detector
- Use toy Monte Carlo method to determine correction factors for signals from muons while looking for massive supersymmetric partners
- Use Monte Carlo to model all the backgrounds to a very small signal of three W's in proton-proton collisions
Prerequisites & Skills
Knowing a programming language like Python or C or C++ or Julia would be useful.
